POSTCARD | India

In September 2006 I spent three weeks travelling in northern India. During this time I ended up travelling from Manali to Leh, a two day trip by jeep or bus. The road from Manali to Leh was one of those trips within a trip. Half way through the first day, I realised that there was a story to photograph.
Open during the short summer months, the road winds 475 km from Manali to Leh. The road crosses a number of passes, some topping 4,000 metres. I remember having a crushing altitude headache on the first night with a total loss of appetite. Needless to say, I was pretty happy to descend to a lower altitude the next day.
The road winds through some pretty stunning desert mountain scenery. Aurora Photos recently ran an editorial feature on the road, which of course is available for licensing. Hit the link to see more photos.
